Client Spotlight: CS5 & Flex 4 for Academy of Art University

roundpeg, inc. recently delivered a large project for San Francisco’s Academy of Art code named Critique. The application reads remote images submitted by students for instructor review. The instructor has a set of drawing and annotation tools to enable markup and commenting on the student’s work. Critique also supports audio record and playback to enable audio comments.

Pre-Release CS5/Flashbuilder 4: When the project began in November of 2009, Flashbuilder was still in beta. After reviewing the beta versions of Flex4 (now Flashbuilder) it was determined that the new Spark architecture, associated skinning and especially the addition of FlexUnit4 were large enough incentives to justify the risk of developing while still in beta. In the end, it was the right call.

MVCS Implementation and Swiz IoC: After reviewing all available platforms for AS3 (21 in total), it was determined that we would take the advice of Joe Berkovitz and roll our own MVCS platform. To leverage the new Spark architecture, we added a specific skins package to support our designers and a delegates package to support low-level drawing calculations, zip compression/decompression, xml parsing and JSON marshal/unmarshal operation. With Swiz IoC we maximized our testing environment and eliminated dependencies through simple injection.

Agile Development: From the beginning, Critique was designed with agile techniques. Daily scrums kept us on track with weekly pushes to staging for full customer evaluation at every step. All code implementation was developed using test driven techniques. At roundpeg, we take testing seriously and have many java and ruby projects that use TDD, but this was our first large Flex/Action Script project to take the same approach. Although we had a small team of four engineers, we still had quite a bit of refactoring as the project developed. The diligent use of TDD made this much easier.
