Are you Flexible or gone in a Flash?
Flex has been part of the Open Source community since the release of Flex 3. What's different now is that Adobe has released the roadmap for Flex, relinquishing control of the SDK to the community at large. Adobe plans to be part of that community, rather than being the controlling body. There are still some issues with this approach since Adobe is not opening up the Flash Player to the Open Source community. When trying to build a platform that is dependent on the Flash Player and you don’t know the underlying features, it makes it difficult to extend past the current release.
With this new announcement, many existing developers and organizations are worried about what this means to their existing projects and initiatives. Along with participating in the Flex SDK development, Adobe has also renewed their commitment to the FlashBuilder product. Adobe has stated that future FlashBuilder releases will be compatible with the Open Source Flex SDK.
The bottom line: Adobe believes in the long-term, that HTML5 will be the best technology for enterprise application development. They also see that Flex has clear benefits for large-scale client projects typically associated with desktop application profiles.
With the proliferation of screens these days, it is difficult to take advantage of the core Flex promise of "Write once, deliver anywhere."
As an organization, roundpeg is realigning our consulting services and education courses to suit the needs of the community and of course our customers. We are rolling out HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript classes that match the work that we've been doing for clients in the last couple years. Our engineers are still the same Flex experts we've relied upon in the past, but they've also been adapting to this new environment with exciting new projects in eLearning and mobile development.
Much of this work has been in HTML5 to accommodate the multitude of screens and browsers that end users are demanding.
As we move away from Flex and Flash Mobile, and toward HTML5, know that we will continue to support our Flex clients while adjusting to this and any other moving targets.
If there is a bright side to any of this, it is that we are in a changing area of technology, where things are moving at a rapid pace. At roundpeg, we will continue to provide education and services that keep you and your projects at the forefront of reliable technologies.
